Vintage Notes

The 2017 vintage began with above average rainfall as the Paso Robles area began to rebound from drought. The wet start was followed by average temperatures that lasted through June. Higher than average winds during bloom affected fruit set in some areas of Paso Robles. Harvest was a few days later than average this year, compressing our growing season. A severe heat spike in September with highs of 115 degrees halted maturation, delaying harvest for about two weeks. Temperatures became more seasonal throughout October until a frost in some areas of Paso Robles in late October created more challenges for our harvest. Overall, the 2017 harvest was an oddly paced, challenging harvest in Paso Robles. In spite of difficult conditions, the vintage shows excellent maturity and depth of flavor.

Tasting Notes

A full-bodied wine with a dense core of fresh raspberry and cranberry fruit intertwined with a peppery spice. Soft tannins and moderate acidity nicely balance the robust fruit and cedar spice flavors in this food-friendly wine.

Wine Details

Vintage: 2018

Blend: 94% Zinfandel, 5% Syrah, 1% Petite Sirah

pH: 3.68

Total Acidity: 6.76 g/L

Alcohol: 15.5%

Winemaking

The grapes we use for the Zinfandel are from cooler districts in Paso Robles. The cooler overnight lows help the grapes mature slowly, creating density and complexity. The wine is aged in a mixture of Eastern European and American Oak for 14 months.

Food Pairing

Enjoy with a juicy steak, grilled portabella mushroom, pungent cheese or decadent chocolate desserts.

Vintage Notes

The 2018 vintage began with a wet cool, wet spring. The cool weather delayed bud break and extended flowering leading to shatter in some exposed areas. In Mid-April some areas frosted, further delaying set and the 2018 season. A 40-day heat wave in July and August created challenges in most areas. By late August, the weather became more seasonal with temperatures remaining mild throughout harvest. On average, harvest was 2 weeks later than recent vintages at Robert Hall. The initial cool temperatures and heat wave lead vines to produce smaller clusters and berries, creating dark, phenolically dense wines. The 2018 vintage is shaping up to be a great vintage in Paso Robles with excellent maturity and aging potential.

Total Acidity: 7.41 g/L

Winemaking

The vineyard's proximity to the winery is one of the ways we capture aromatics. We open the winery early and pick at night to keep fruit cool. We use a gentle press cycle to extract the juice and fill tanks specially designed to limit oxygen exposure.

Food Pairing

Pair the 2019 Sauvignon Blanc with salads, roasted vegetables, and seafood. We especially like it with Sea Bass and Oysters.

Vintage Notes

The 2019 vintage began with a cool start. We saw above-average rainfall in Paso Robles helping to cleanse soils. The cool weather protracted bud break and bloom delaying our growing season. A heatwave in late July helped to accelerate our delayed season with harvest starting about 7 days late at the end of August. The weather became more seasonal until several frost events in late September and October created challenges for low elevation areas. Luckily, we saw very little frost damage in our vineyards this season. The overall yield in the vineyard is lower than average. While short and somewhat sporadic, vintage 2019 is showing to be rich in flavor and phenolically dense.
